Coral restoration systems

Aquarium Connections is proud to be pioneering the design and build of coral restoration systems, working alongside leading coral scientists and philanthropists all over the world. Our systems are designed in line with our ACT Initiative, facilitating the restoration and research of coral projects around the world.

At Aquarium Connections, our bespoke systems are designed to meet the unique needs of each project, offering custom solutions that optimize performance within your available space. While our standard off-the-shelf coral spawning systems meet most needs, we understand that some projects require a more personalized approach. Our bespoke systems are meticulously crafted based on your specific requirements and project goals, ensuring you receive a solution that perfectly aligns with your vision.

Our portfolio showcases our versatility and expertise in crafting custom solutions. Share your biggest goals with us, and we’ll work together to bring them to life. Although our speciality is coral systems, we invite you to bring us new challenges.

Extra features

We offer the option to integrate solar panels to support your system’s energy needs, along with custom extras like canopies and more to suit your specific requirements.

V shaped raceways

Ideal for Microfragementation and grow out applications
Our innovative V-shaped raceways are designed for the optimal growth and efficiency of juvenile corals. Corals spawned in our standard systems are transferred here to grow to their desired size. This modular, expandable system adapts to space constraints and coral output needs, making it ideal for micro-fragmentation practices. The concept is somewhat of a coral conveyor belt, with new corals being added to the system, the older ones move down the line, until they reach a size ready to plant out.

Key features

Modular Systems
Being modular, the systems can be expanded later, without the need for additional filtration. This can be modified depending on the space available.

Minimized Sedimentation Stress
The V-shape, forces detritus to settle in the bottom of the V-section, making maintenance and cleaning very simple. Reduces coral mortality and ensures optimal water flow.

New and improved dynamic flow system
With the maternity trays sitting at 45 degrees, water flows through the centre of the corals, keeping flow laminar and consistent throughout the entire system. This has been adapted to allow unique flow patterns and strengths along the length of the V tray to suit the corals being housed.

Benefits

High Capacity
Each 2-meter section holds up to 1,260 coral plugs, supporting up to 30,000 plugs in a single system.

Micro fragmentation and Grow out
The V shaped raceways are perfect for practices such as micro fragmentation and propagation of coral due to the style of the maternity trays and coral plugs available. Maternity trays can be swapped from one side to the other during maintenance, changing the direction of which the flow hits the coral.

Off the shelf spawning and settlement systems

Ideal for Coral spawning applications
Our off-the-shelf coral spawning systems incorporate the latest technology to advance the original design, as featured in the scientific journal Ecology and Evolution. These systems are divided into two types: the broodstock conditioning/spawning system and the coral embryo rearing/grow-out settlement systems.

Key features

Light Control
All systems feature cladding and sliding doors to block external light, with a detachable canopy that allows full control over the coral spawning schedule.

Triton Method
Each system can be set up to use the Triton Method, featuring a sump with an algae bed and high-spec equipment for optimal coral health and growth.

Ballasts
These systems have been updated to include a ballast, this acts as a fail safe if spawning happens unexpectedly, to avoid missing the spawn all together.

Benefits

Controlled Environment
Using the detachable canopy, sliding doors, and APEX controlled system, this creates a very controlled environment that can be modified to suit the species of coral being worked with.

Space efficient
These off the shelf systems are streamlined and self efficient, they don’t take up much space and come in one box ready for set up.

Step by step set up
The systems are straightforward to set up and install, meaning you can get to work immediately.

Specialised container laboratory design

Our self-contained lab systems are state-of-the-art, fully equipped labs built into robust shipping containers. These portable, durable labs are perfect for coral restoration efforts, accommodating up to four separate spawning systems and providing flexibility for multiple spawning events throughout the year. Options include integrated quarantine tanks and recruit grow-out systems.

Key features

Built-in Systems
Includes all filtration and comprehensive climate control with air conditioning and dehumidifiers.

Portability
Designed for easy relocation and secure storage, the lab is nearly hurricane-proof, ensuring minimal damage and continued operation during adverse weather conditions.

Benefits

Design to needs
These bespoke systems can be designed to your specific needs. Over years of experience, Aquarium Connections has been able to maximise space efficiency to ensure you get the most out of your container laboratory.

Bespoke design
The containers can be 20ft or 40ft and modified to meet the exact needs of the project at hand.

High Capacity
Each 2-meter section holds up to 1,260 coral plugs, supporting up to 30,000 plugs in a single system.

Multi-purpose Air driven coral restoration trays

The multipurpose air driven coral restoration trays are designed to utilise air flow to mimic a more natural source of flow and circulation in the system. This allows for a perfect level of flow for coral micro fragments, in addition to acting as broodstock holding trays or quarantine tanks.

Key features

Air driven
The use of air for flow and circulation, providing a simulation very similar to that of waves in the ocean.

Dry controls box
An important feature of the systems, is the dry controls box, ensuring smooth running of the systems even during bad weather conditions.

Benefits

Space efficient
These air driven trays are streamlined and self-efficient, they can standalone or be grouped to utilise the same filtration and controls box.

Multi-purpose
Can be used as a broodstock holding tank, quarantine or for microfragementation.

Thermal stress system

The thermal stress system is a system tailored to test coral fragments under different temperatures to monitor their thermal resistance. This setup enables the testing of up to eighteen different species or colonies at nine distinct temperature settings.

Each replica tank is equipped with an independent filtration system, ensuring complete isolation between the tanks and preventing cross-contamination. This allows for precise control over each tank’s environment and supports reliable experimental conditions.

Thermoresilience
The system set up allows for groundbreaking research into the thermal resistance of different coral colonies or species at different temperatures

Versatile
The design of this system offers multiple testing approaches. It accommodates both short-term experiments involving large numbers of coral fragments, as well as long-term conditioning in nine replicate tanks.

Benefits

Replication
The system provides space for 18 different fragments to be tested, at 9 different temperatures.

Photography
It includes one photography tank for monitoring and observation of the coral fragments being tested.
